HOW APARTMENT SAVERS BEGAN · CIRCA 2010

Three jobs.
Three roommates.
One couch.

Before Apartment Savers was a website, it was a way to look for a little breathing room in the rent bill.

Justin was struggling. He shared an apartment with three roommates, worked at two pizza places and UPS, and slept on the couch. He needed an opportunity to make rent a little easier.

01MAKING ENDS MEET

A full apartment.
A very full workload.

In 2010, Justin lived at Ivystone Apartments in Virginia. The household had four people: Justin and three roommates. His sleeping spot was the couch.

He was working three jobs—two pizza places and UPS. Working more was already a big part of his life. The question was how to find another opportunity within the expenses he was already carrying.

02A HELPFUL INTRODUCTION

What if a referral
could help with rent?

Justin arranged a referral deal with his apartment community. When someone mentioned his name under that arrangement, he received $500 off one month’s rent. The person he referred received $250.

FOR THE REFERRED RENTER$250

for mentioning his name

That was the insight behind Apartment Savers: a useful introduction could help someone find a home and, when the community’s terms allowed it, help someone else with housing costs.

These amounts describe Justin’s historical arrangement, not current Ivystone terms or a guarantee of similar benefits.
03THE PART WORTH LEARNING FROM

A good idea needs
clear ground rules.

Justin recalls eventually bringing in about 98% of the community’s referrals. He also got into trouble as the effort grew. This is his personal recollection, not independently verified referral data.

The lesson Apartment Savers carries forward is to confirm the arrangement: who qualifies, how a referral is registered, whether there are limits, and exactly what each person receives. A resident program is not automatic permission to operate an outside referral business.

Get the rules before making the introduction.

Ask for current written terms and community approval. Respect referral caps and attribution rules. Do not assume a past arrangement applies somewhere else.

04THE MISSION TODAY

Help people find
their next opportunity.

Apartment Savers exists for people looking for an opportunity to save money on rent. We research publicly described resident referral programs and make the sources and uncertainties easier to understand.

Some communities publish rent credits. Some advertise cash or another reward. Others list a program without publishing the benefits. Each listing tells you what the source says and what to ask next.

Apartment Savers currently has no community referral agreements and no renter offers of its own. Explore the research, contact leasing, and check what is available to you.
